Autumn Under Water.

More photos in the spirit of Autumnal Acceptance! (it helps to accept the end of summer when I have my camera around.) Leaves floating and buried under shallow water...

And I'm loving subtle Autumn reflections that still have lots of green in them...

And finally, I love the super-dedicated beavers building their winter homes in the shadow of the changing colors.  Look at this one....on its way to being a mansion, right? Who's the lucky lady?

Happy Monday...(if there is such a thing..) It is supposed to rain every day this week, but the weather hasn't been accurate in months so I won't get my hopes down for nothing...my camera's coming everywhere I go despite the predictions...:) 
Also I redesigned my blog for the 137th time this year. I think I have banner obsessive compulsion. Someday I'll write a post with all the banners I've created. (it would take me hours, though.)
ALSO....last week two of my photos made it into Explore on Flickr. I got lots of nice feedback and visitors. That's always super fun! If you're on Flickr you can visit me here. ; )

Hurricane Earl, and Exploring the East Bay, RI

So, Hurricane Earl didn't have too much of an impact here in New England. In fact I did head out the following day to do some shopping and exploring in the East Bay part of Rhode Island. Here are some pics from my day. Nothing too fancy...I spent much of the day shopping!

So above is the pier at Colt State Park's beach...normally this goes until the last pole but as you can see it's under water. I had to run off the metal a few moments later as the water was coming through the bottom and spraying up onto my lens.

Seagull coming in for a landing...to eat my Dunkin Donuts muffin crumbs. Ok, I admit I'm one of those people who feeds seagulls. But they're cute, no? I swear this one was looking into my soul.....alright, maybe not.

This guy above used the waves to do some kite surfing.

Driving down County Road in Barrington (I think?) I came across this gazebo and duck pond, where a father
and son were fishing with a little net for goldfish. The little boy wanted a pet fish. The father told me the last one they caught in this pond lived for several years...Below you can see a small orange flash in the water...that is one of the goldfish. When I had left, they still had no luck catching any...

I enjoyed my drive down this route which goes through a few coastal towns on the East Bay of Rhode Island and eventually ends in Newport. But that's a whole other day...

Mom and Mary's Day-cation to Block Island

My mother and I decided to spend the day Saturday bonding and sightseeing. We took the ferry over to Block Island to enjoy a gorgeous day...warm and sunny...here are some pics from our day!

 So, arriving by ferry this is the first sight- the cliffs of Block Island. You can see the far off North Lighthouse on the cliffs.

We visited the Southeast Light, which is more accessible by foot.

We went inside the lighthouse...it was about 110 degrees. The light is blinking here. Our tour guide told us this light is worth $3 million and it is riddled with bullet holes and cracks dating back to the civil war.

We then headed over to the next bluff down, to go to the cliff's edge and view the lighthouse over the water. If you look carefully you will see a staircase built into the cliff below the lighthouse and people on the beach below. It is a crazy walk down, but worth while.

The sun cooperated more toward the left of our view- the water looked almost tropical, not like New England at all.

We drove back toward town...

Where I convinced my mother to stop at Abrams Animal Farm....we had so much fun feeding the animals, especially this cute llama who nuzzled me the whole time.

We found this strange, giant broccoli-eating emu/ ostrich bird there...

Along with this otherworldly creature...the "Zedonk" (right). Half donkey, half zebra.

We then spent a few lovely hours at the beach...

Bye bye, Block Island!  (That's the National Hotel in the near left background, a historic site, where we ate lunch.)  Ahhh....so peaceful! Thanks Ma for a beautiful day!

Road Trip to Wellfleet

Just a few pics from my Memorial Day weekend road trip up the Cape to Wellfleet, Massachusetts.

Below is the requisite Lobster Roll sandwich. After spending a few hours at the flea market, I stopped at a random roadside place with a faded sign and very few cars. Oh well, more for me!

The beach at Newcomb Hollow was road-blocked, due to the lots being full, so I drove a half mile up the road to discover this beach. The parking lot was above the highest bluffs I had ever seen. The sand dunes slid precariously down to the water... I had to remove my shoes, as did everyone else, to get enough footing to slide down the bluffs to the beach below.

Below, Wellfleet Harbor. Wellfleet is bordered on its East side by the Atlantic Ocean (above) and on its West side by the Cape Cod Bay (below.) Wellfleet is known for its delicious osyters and many of them could be seen in the mudflats around the marshlands.

Waters off Falmouth, Massachusetts. Clear and greenish blue and full of rocks.

Cormorants. A nice fisherman told me what they were. He was shocked that living in Rhode Island, I had never seen them. He said they were "like pigeons," and laughed when I took pictures, but I had never seen them. Beautiful, geese-like birds, they soared looking for fish like giant bats.
